Operating from a virtual capacity, Quartz Counselling provides counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples, aged fifteen and beyond, who reside in Canada.

Court Campbell, Clinical Director of Quartz Counselling

If you prefer to book An Initial Intake Assessment, we will meet virtually (via the JANE Booking system) and I will ask you some semi-structured interview-style questions to gain a firmer understanding of who you are as an individual; what has brought you here; and where you would like to go.

Once you’ve had the chance to review the Areas of Expertise section, I invite you to book a 20-minute Complimentary Phone Consultation, where I can have the opportunity to listen to what has led you to seek therapy, and to answer any questions you may have of myself or The Clinic; and for you to determine how you feel about approaching these challenges together. Click the link above to email court@quartzcounselling.ca to schedule our phone consultation.

Court's Counselling Experience

Court's Counselling Experience

“Into this world we’re thrown…” (Morrison, 1971) are more than groovy lyrics, they seem to reflect how we’ve all just kind of landed somewhere on a map; amongst peoples and situations we’re expected to navigate; during this specific moment in history…I also feel as though we’re each doing our best to adapt and find peace despite all this.

I began my clinical journey by providing peer support to youth who were reliant on the shelter system. This humbling experience led me to conducting academic research amongst the substance-using adolescent population that is to be used to facilitate a harm reduction strategy for York Region. I then went on to work in a group-home setting where I provided mental health support to twenty-seven adults who predominantly presented with schizophrenia and related conditions. This incredibly rewarding endeavor led me to working in a retirement home where I provided cognitive assessments and consultations.

I received a B.A. in Psychology from York University (2019) and hold a M.Ed. in Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Toronto (2021), and am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario; I have since worked in private practice.

Leaning on curiosity, compassion, and even humour, I’ve had the privilege of being a second set of eyes for individuals from all walks of life (see 2nd paragraph), and stages psychological / relational / spiritual / development, whom have been faced with a wide array of obstacles they just needed a fellow traveller to work through it all with.

My clinical orientation adheres to a client-centered, psychodynamic, and relational approach to cognitive clarity. Once safety, trust, and comfort have been established, we may decide to dig into the past, and use what we uncover to better understand our present, or even to plan our next moves. We may end up focusing merely on next moves, or current turmoil; in any event, we will accomplish all this while holding the therapeutic relationship as a key element toward positive psychological growth.

Some Answers to Some Questions

Does The Clinic provide in-person therapy?

The Clinic is solely providing virtual therapy for the foreseeable future.

What are the benefits of virtual therapy?

Some of the benefits of Virtual Therapy include: Easier access to healthcare services; the comfort and convenience of choosing where you engage with these services; as well as preserving the continuity of your care should any components of the past few years repeat themselves (e.g., Pandemic).

What are the limitations of virtual therapy?

In terms of Limitations of Virtual Therapy: The video conferencing technology we will be using is different from a direct client-psychotherapist session in that I am not directly in the room with you should things become emotionally overwhelming (however, there are many contingencies put in place as precaution); we may experience technical difficulties and internet interruptions (troubleshooting procedures are in place to ease this potentiality).

When can I expect results from therapy?

While it is not uncommon for some to report experiencing positive changes after one or a few sessions, long-lasting and durable gains generally take several weeks or months of consistent therapy. Everyone is different, and so are their life experiences. Some early indicators of positive therapeutic growth include: Empowerment; feeling understood and seen; learning to turn one's perception into perspective. Some signs of more durable change include: Strong self-awareness; the application of new skills and techniques; symptom reduction; improved functioning.

Why does the clinic offer both 50 and 80-minute sessions?

Some individuals prefer having more time to gather their thoughts and feelings, and find that 50-minute sessions are limited toward that end. If certain exercises (e.g., guided meditation) are clinically indicated for and desired by clients, more session time may also be a wise idea to get the most out of the experiential work. When dealing with couples, some folks prefer to have that extra 30-minutes to really get into the nitty gritty.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

I am a firm believer that we all have our blind spots when it comes to self-perception, and that two heads are often better than one in this regard. If any of the Areas of Expertise resonate with your situation, it may benefit you to unpack; explore; work through; and hopefully, grow from them with a trained practitioner.

Is Psychotherapy covered by OHIP?

Unfortunately, the practice of Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP; this is generally reserved for those Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and General Practitioners working in public settings.

What do typical sessions look like?

The work begins with an Initial Intake Session which is formatted more structurally (i.e., I will ask some standard questions and you can go into as much detail as you wish) and it will give us an opportunity to get to know one another.

The first few sessions allow me to formulate a case conceptualization that will evolve as layers unfold. We will then collaborate to create a treatment plan that is custom-tailored to fit your unique story. Another main focus here is on our therapeutic alliance and the strength of our relationship; I believe this to be the factor that informs how far we get in this process. Beyond this, we hone-in on our target goals and treatment trajectory to work towards what it is you've sought from therapy.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

In Ontario, both counselling and psychotherapy are regulated professions focused on mental health support, but psychotherapy involves a more in-depth approach to treatment. While some use the terms interchangeably, psychotherapy is defined as the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional, or behavioral disturbances using psychotherapeutic techniques. Counselling, on the other hand, is often seen as a more supportive process for self-knowledge, emotional acceptance, and personal growth. In Ontario, only certain regulated professionals, such as Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) and those in other regulated health professions like social work and nursing, can use the title "psychotherapist" and practice psychotherapy. Canadian Psychological Association. (2013).

Do you offer a reduced rate for sessions?

If finances propose a barrier to accessing treatment, please express this in either the Phone Consultation or the Initial Intake Assessment, and The Clinic will determine if there are any Sliding Scale slots available at this time, and we can collaborate on an appropriate and comfortable set fee for services going forward.

What is the Jane Booking System & how do I use it?

Jane is an online practice management system with fully integrated telehealth options that is compliant with HIPAA, PIPEDA, and GDPR privacy standards for personal health information.

Will my Insurance Provider be recognized by The Clinic?

While the specific coverage details vary depending on the individual plan, here are some insurance companies in Ontario that commonly offer psychotherapy coverage:

Canada Life

Sun Life

Manulife

Green Shield Canada

Blue Cross

What are the different therapy styles?

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy and each are beneficial when paired with the right individual or symptom(s) being treated. I draw from many different modalities (depending on its usefulness for the client and their presentation) such as: Internal Family Systems; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Dialectal Behavioural Therapy; Client-Centered Therapy; Schema Therapy; Attachment Therapy; Narrative Therapy etc.,
